I am slowly training our shih tzu puppy (14 weeks) to walk on the loose leash. I noticed that she has a much easier time in the shade. As soon as we are in the sun she starts squealing like crazy if she has to slow down and walk next to my feet. as soon as we reach a shaded area again she takes a resting position flat on the ground. we haven't trimmed her yet and I guess it's time to do so. anyone experience similar behavior? did the dog have an easier time in the sun after the trim?
I live in a very humid and hot area right now, and my shih tzu has some problems in the heat as well. He doesn't squeal, but he get's super tired and pulls to get to the shade to lay down. It did help when we got his hair cut but he still doesn't like to be out in the heat long. We keep his hair very short now so he won't get to over heated when we go on walks, I also cut our walks short. I only keep him out for about 15-20 minutes.
From everything I've read, Shih's are very sensitive to heat. It's probably a good idea that you're getting her trimmed. I would also suggest walking her in the early morning or after the sun sets. I don't have my new puppy yet, but I live in CA and with the recent heatwave, I would definitely not walk him or her in this heat! Have a great day.

Yeah, we are planning on getting a clipper and start grooming her ourselves. The challenging part is the ever changing weather in northern CA with warm days and then foggy cool days. I guess we'll have to get her a sweater after the grooming just for those "summer days" up here. Not a big doggie sweater guy but what is good for her is ok by me.
