How do I say this.....

Well today my neutered 3 year old shih tzu got a little excited and his "red rocket" came out and stayed out for about 5 hours..... I called the vet and they said it was no big deal, but when I googled the problem they said to take him to the vet ASAP and that it could be life threatening. So that's what I did. Luckily as I pulled into the vet I checked him and it was back to normal. Is this normal/common????? Has this happened to anyone else?????
I know it may sound crazy but it really freaked me out!
