I found that I had better luck with a litter box. I bought a dog one thats a little bigger than a cat one. I just kept putting Lucy in that about once an hour and I put it in her area where she sleeps. She finally got the hint and now goes in the box. You just have to be patient. She goes in the box during the night but she enjoys going outside in the daytime and she pottys outside just because I take her out. I have to admit she was very easy to train.

What work for me is putting my puppy on a schedule as well as crate training. I would take him out and still do, when he wakes up. I wiould feed him, take his food away after 1/2 hr and take him out again 1/2 hour after he eats. I never leave food out for him to eat all day. If we play hard, I will take him out again after he plays. I also have a bell attach to my door and tried teaching him to hit it when he needs to go outside. He never hits it though LOL he just looks at it. But sinces he's a good dog, he normally just comes up and give me a low bark. I know it's time to go out. When he goes outside, I give him lots of praise!

I have been very successful potty training shih-tzu pups. When I first get them home, I take them to the area I will be taking them to go do their stuff. Then I take them out every 20 minutes(excluding bed time), out the same door and to the area they will be able to go to the rest room. I also set a timer to remind me that I need to take them out. Then I move it to every 30 minutes after about 2 days. Both of my dogs sleep with us, When we first got them I put their leash on them at night and had the wrist handle on my hand so that I would wake up when they were moving around and needed to go out. I have trained other peoples puppies for them with this technique and they were successful. I have trained 6 pups this way. Knock on wood I have yet to have an accident.
